For my birthday in April my kids sent me an airplane ticket to Kansas to come visit and help my daughter in law decorate their recently purchased Lake House.
Lake Lotawana is in Missouri about 45 minutes from Jen and Bryan's Overland Park, Kansas home. The three story, four bedroom lake front home came fully furnished but completely un-accessorized. Jen wanted to add lots of color and Bryan wanted it done as inexpensively as possible.
We could do that.
Here is the main floor living room with the kitchen off to the left. Since we had just four days to plan, shop and install, this area was our main focus.
Jen had some definite ground rules:
1. It needed to be kid friendly. They bought the house so they'd have a family get away spot for their teen aged kids to bring their friends to hang out while enjoying the lake with its many activities. Jen wanted it to be easy maintenance (not too much fluff) but feel like home. She wanted it colorful, warm and inviting.
2. She needed a table in the main living area for their two Cockatiel. (I needed it not to be a Costco table).
We shopped in the Kansas City area the first part of each day then drove to the lake in the afternoon to install that days acquisitions.
As we were first getting started Jen said, no pillows, no baskets and no throws. What?! Seems she has this fear of spiders and her bug man told her spiders like to hide behind colorful throw pillows and jump out and bite unsuspecting victims while they're not looking. Somewhere in Create and Barrel she overcame her aversion to throw pillows (thank heaven).
Our jumping off point was this clearence sale 8' x 10' rug from Target. It grounded the two sofas and the beat up coffee table (which will later get a coat of Annie Sloan chalk paint) while adding a bright pop of color.
We found the side table on our forth day of shopping and it really transformed the stairwell. (Notice the basket up there on the landing) hehe
Almost all of the wall accessories came from Hobby Lobby (50% off). The initials represent the three families that co own the home (Jen's parents and sister and brother in law).
The bird cage will go here.
The lamp base below is from our Ventura beach house and the shade is from Target.
Here's a shot of the finished living room. It's amazing what some colorful pillows, a rug and a few accessories can do. The only piece of furniture we bought was the stairwell side table.
This is the chandelier over the kitchen sink. It's cute but not the look we were going for.
The new one is from Home Depot. Bill (bless his heart) did all of the installation. I told him I thought we could make a living doing inexpensive updates on homes but thought he might kill me in the process.
I love how the kitchen nook turned out. Jen's mom had given her these gorgeous MacKenzie-Childs plates - they were in a cupboard in her Kansas City home. I pulled them out and hung them as art. Jen told me they have special meaning for her family and they really are beautiful on the taupe walls. The La Sorella sign is a nod to Jen's Italian roots and means "sisters". The indoor/outdoor pillows on the window seat are from Home Depot and Kirkland's.
We also worked on the bathrooms and four bedrooms but I didn't get many pictures of those. The house has a second downstairs kitchen and living area and pool table room that we will tackle on my next visit.
As much fun as it was for me to help decorate this beautiful home it was even more fun spending time with Jen as we ran from place to place like crazy women. Jen was so easy to work with. She knows what she likes and has impeccable taste. After all, she chose my boy to marry.
I am so blessed!
